Presidential Greeting

Dear Reader,

In April 2020, the Hydrogen Technology Platform was established with the common goal of giving a significant boost to the development of the Hungarian hydrogen economy, bringing together stakeholders to identify common paths for development, and creating a platform for the professional consensus-based determination of relevant focus areas for the Hungarian economy and science, as well as the development of well-founded incentive and regulatory tools.

The Platform received supportive backing from the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, the Office of the President of Hungary, representatives of Hungarian universities, research institutes, large corporations, and SMEs. We knew that with the increasing adoption of electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and other environmentally friendly technologies, we would contribute to the fight against climate change and global warming while promoting the growth of our economy and creating more jobs.

In the first phase, we completed the so-called White Paper, which included surveys that contributed to the development of Hungary’s national hydrogen strategy, adopted by the Hungarian Government in June 2021.

The experiences of the Platform, the high level of interest, and the successful completion of the tasks undertaken in the first phase offered a significant amount of further work for the next period, which led to the establishment of the Hydrogen Technology Alliance as a legal entity on November 3, 2021, with nearly 90 members.

The strategic objective of the Alliance is to provide the professional framework for industrial, economic, and scientific cooperation necessary for the development of the Hungarian hydrogen economy, and to create organized cooperation among stakeholders interested in the Hungarian market, thereby supporting the establishment and strengthening of the domestic hydrogen sector.

With gratitude,

István Lepsényi

President of the Hungarian Hydrogen Technology Alliance

Some Facts About the Hungarian Hydrogen Technology Alliance

The Hungarian Hydrogen Technology Alliance brings together representatives, researchers, and professionals from the domestic hydrogen industry, as well as international and Hungarian companies, with the common goal of boosting domestic hydrogen production, reducing its costs, and developing storage and distribution solutions to promote the use of low-carbon hydrogen.

The establishment of the Hungarian Hydrogen Technology Alliance was preceded by one and a half years of professional work. On April 27, 2020, with the support of Prof. Dr. László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology, the National Hydrogen Technology Platform was formed with the aim of creating professional frameworks for the industrial, economic, and scientific collaboration necessary for the development of the Hungarian hydrogen economy. One of the tasks of the Hungarian Hydrogen Technology Platform was to prepare the so-called White Paper, which included surveys and contributed to the development of the national hydrogen strategy adopted by the Hungarian Government in 2021.

The Hungarian Hydrogen Technology Alliance, as a legal entity, was established on November 3, 2021, due to the successful implementation of the tasks undertaken during the initial phase, the high level of interest, and the need for further significant tasks in the upcoming period.

Currently, the Alliance has over 90 members, including key corporations playing a crucial role in the development of the industry, knowledgeable SMEs in technology development, leading universities in research, and economic companies interested in applying the results.

The Hungarian Hydrogen Technology Alliance has established five working groups within the organization, which play a significant role in effective professional work:

  1. Hydrogen and Electricity Sector Working Group, led by MVM Zrt.
  2. Hydrogen and Gas Networks Working Group, led by MOL Nyrt. and FGSZ Zrt.
  3. Transportation Working Group, led by KTI Hungarian Transport Research Centre
  4. R&D and Education Working Group, led by TTK Research Centre for Natural Sciences
  5. Industrial (“Horizontal”) Working Group, led by AVL Hungary Kft.

The Professional Organization surveys, involves, and encourages domestic stakeholders active in hydrogen technologies. It builds connections among Platform members, i.e., corporate and scientific R&D stakeholders, as well as relevant governmental stakeholders, to ensure smooth information flow among interested parties. The networking extends to international, mainly EU, involvement in the hydrogen technology “circulation,” with a particular emphasis on building connections with hydrogen technology stakeholders in the Central European (V4) region. The Alliance also provides professional and strategic recommendations to domestic policy-making, primarily in energy and transportation policy, climate protection, and industrial development, which on one hand support the domestic presence and advancement of hydrogen technologies, and on the other hand stimulate the development of the mentioned fields, thereby potentially providing multifaceted and mutual benefits.

The tasks of the Alliance include:

  • active participation in the implementation of the National Hydrogen Strategy, including coordination of the Green Truck Program,

  • maintaining communication with the members of the association to channel professional needs and proposals aimed at promoting the spread of hydrogen technology,

  • providing professional support for the establishment of regulatory conditions and incentive systems necessary for the domestic spread of hydrogen and hydrogen technologies,

  • proactive involvement in generating industry pilot projects in the field of hydrogen and hydrogen technologies,

  • organizing conferences and other professional events,

  • establishing international professional relationships with hydrogen associations and companies from other countries to facilitate international cooperation of Hungarian stakeholders, particularly in the regional and EU context, and participation in hydrogen projects.

  • conducting societal information and awareness-raising campaigns to showcase the environmental, climate, and economic development benefits of hydrogen and hydrogen technologies.
