5th November in Brussels, the European Commission presented its\u00a0Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP) strategy to accelerate the energy transition of aviation and maritime transport sectors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Hydrogen Europe announced the events in a statement, stressing that it welcomes the STIP for its specific focus on unlocking resources to help projects make the final investment decision, recognizing the importance of decarbonizing the maritime and aviation sectors with all available technological solutions.<\/p>

Laurent Donceel, Director of Transport at Hydrogen Europe commented:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cToday\u2019s communication rightly\u00a0identifies\u00a0that a comprehensive funding approach is necessary to help projects reach FID\u00a0and\u00a0sign durable offtake agreements.\u00a0Yet, the price difference between renewable and low-carbon fuels and their fossil competitors\u00a0remains\u00a0too high and more efforts are needed to narrow the gap.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Under the plan, the EU is expected to mobilise at least \u20ac2.9 billion until the end of 2027:<\/strong><\/p>

  • InvestEU will mobilise at least\u00a0\u20ac2 billion<\/strong>\u00a0for sustainable alternative fuels until 2027, which will help\u00a0bridge financial gaps<\/strong>,<\/li>
  • The Commission will allocate\u00a0\u20ac300 million\u00a0<\/strong>by end of this year to support the production of hydrogen for sustainable aviation (SAF) and maritime (SMF) fuels through the European Hydrogen Bank.<\/li>
  • The Commission, through Horizon Europe, will support more R&I projects with a budget of\u00a0\u20ac133<\/strong>\u00a0million<\/strong>.<\/li>
  • The Commission will mobilise\u00a0\u20ac153<\/strong>\u00a0million for\u00a0synthetic aviation fuel projects<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u20ac293 million for maritime fuel projects<\/strong>\u00a0under the\u00a0Innovation Fund<\/strong>.<\/li>
  • An\u00a0eSAF Early Movers Coalition pilot project<\/strong>\u00a0of committed Member States will be launched by end of 2025 with a stated target budget of at least\u00a0\u20ac500 million for synthetic aviation fuel projects<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    The new instruments put in place by STIP also include an intermediary mechanism connecting fuel producers and buyers to provide revenue certainty and de-risk investments, which along with the funding listed above will not only help decarbonise the aviation and maritime sectors but also reduce imports of fossil fuels, improve self-sufficiency and energy security for civil and military use, and also launch an innovative and competitive new industry that will help European jobs and growth numbers.\u00a0<\/p>

    Boosting the production and uptake of renewable and low-carbon fuels is essential for the resilience and decarbonisation of Europe.
