Hungary's Hydrogen Strategy

Hydrogen technology
With the strategic-level recommendation of the Association, Hungary already in the summer of 2021
published its own national hydrogen strategy, which aims to
encourage the development of the hydrogen economy and to ensure our country's active
role in the introduction of hydrogen technology in Europe

Hungary's
National Hydrogen Strategy, outlining an ambitious yet realistic vision,
paves the way for building a hydrogen economy, thereby contributing
to the achievement of decarbonisation goals and creating the opportunity
for Hungary to become an active player in the European
hydrogen space. In the long term, the Strategy places “green” hydrogen
in focus, but in addition to hydrogen based on electricity generated from renewable sources, primarily solar energy,
Hungary also does not ignore the possibilities of hydrogen production
based on nuclear power and on carbon-free electricity drawn
from the grid.
Furthermore, for the rapid reduction of emissions and the creation of a viable
hydrogen market, low-carbon hydrogen will also be needed
in the short and medium term.

KEY MEASURES

1)
Within the framework of encouraging the development of large-volume, centralised production
methods meeting local industrial demand, the transformation of existing
hydrogen production methods will begin in order to significantly reduce
their carbon footprint. With regard to carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology
related to hydrogen production, an
encouraging regulatory environment and support system will also
be created.

2)
Encouraging decentralised, carbon-free hydrogen production methods that meet
dispersed, small and medium-scale transport and energy demand.

3) Establishing electrolysis centres to launch production pilots based on photovoltaics (PV) and the electricity grid mix.

4) Establishing a European system of Guarantees of Origin for different types of hydrogen.

5)
Monitoring the development of new production technologies and developing international
cooperation in order to apply market-ready solutions in Hungary
as soon as possible.
